Josh Gorges traded to Buffalo

Marc Bergevin has moved Josh Gorges, trading him to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2016 Second Round Draft Pick. The draft pick was originally owned by Minnesota.

The Canadiens have been trying to move the 29-year-old defenceman since at least the NHL draft.  They originally had a deal done to send Gorges to their rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs, but Gorges refused to waive his modified no-trade clause to go to Toronto.  Gorges was allowed to provide a 15-team list of teams he would refuse a trade to, and his list reportedly includes all six other Canadian teams.

Gorges played most of the season on the Canadiens top defence pair, with P.K. Subban.  He has been a steadying influence beside the young, and talented defender, with Gorges playing more of a stay at home role.  He is known for his ability to block shots and for his excellent work on the Montreal penalty kill.  Last season Gorges had one goal and 13 assists for 14 points.  He has four years remaining in his current six-year deal at a $3.9 million cap hit per season.

Rumours currently say Gorges accepted the move to Buffalo due to Brian Gionta likely signing with the team later today. More to come.
