Clint Dempsey. So hot right now. Seriously, this guy has stepped up his game in amazing ways, scoring eight goals and recording two assists in five games. Yes, five games. Dempsey has at least one game left before he leaves for the US camp in Palo Alto, and he might even squeeze in a midweek game as well. But he still has to get on that plane in a few weeks, and I’m sure he’ll want to do as much damage before he goes.
On Sunday they host the Philadelphia Union, and after having their backline picked apart by New England on Saturday, Dempsey and Obafemi Martins should have no problem doing the same. After that is a mid-week game against Dallas on May 8th. The last time these two teams met Seattle handed them their first loss, so goals may be hard to come by for Dempsey in this game. But never underestimate the Deuce. If he plays he’ll want to go into the World Cup scoring goal after goal.
But what happens when Dempsey is gone? Who will partner with Martins up top and still be as effective as they’ve been so far this season? Well Lamar Neagle has secretly been on a hot steak as well. With a goal in the last two games, he’s starting to come into his own just when Dempsey is about to hop on a plane to Brazil. Kenny Cooper has silently been biding his time on the bench, and will likely slot in either up top or on a wing. Marco Pappa has been showing everyone why he was such a valuable player in this league only 2 seasons ago and will start on a wing, pushing Neagle up top. Gonzalo Pineda has been playing well, and will probably start in the middle with Ozzie Alonso while Brad Evans is away at camp. He’s already been playing there with Evans’ injury keeping him out of the lineup for the last couple of weeks. There’s Chad Barrett and Andy Rose, and there’s the young gun Sean Okoli. What I’m trying to say is, this team is deep and dangerous.
Clint Dempsey has elevated his game and in doing so has brought everyone else on the team up to his level. He’s proved that he was worth every penny they doled out for him and has actually made some of the other players on the team appear as bargains for the skill they are showing they have. The Seattle Sounders are riding a wave right now, and with the framework he’s built will keep them riding high right on through the World Cup break. As for Dempsey, look out world. The deuce is killing it right now and isn’t ready to stop “trying shit” in Brazil.
