Athleticism: A-

Tre Mason has good, not great speed, but movement skills are elite. Can get to full speed in one stride and has excellent quickness in and out of his cuts. Is constantly planting, cutting, spinning, and shifting, making him tough to tackle and almost impossible to lay on a big hit. Incredibly shifty to avoid would-be tacklers and is able to set up blocks with his movements. Can break off long runs, but can still be caught from behind.

Power: B-

Is not overly powerful, as he possesses a small frame, but is far from easy to bring to the turf. Runs with exceptional balance and is tough to arm or shove tackle for such a small back. Can be tripped up, but still take several strides before falling down. Runs with excellent body lean and determination, rarely letting himself take a big hit and frequently falling forward. Moves his legs relentlessly and is able to keep moving with defenders on him. However, is rather mediocre running between the tackles and up the middle, as he has trouble finding lanes and will pinball off of his own blockers.

Third Down: D+

Was not used much outside of his role as a ballcarrier while at Auburn. Appeared to catch the ball fairly well, but did not see many reps doing so. Did not really run routes, and was more of a last resort in the passing game. Lacks much of an anchor to be effective as a blocker, but can at least chip and get in the way. Lacks much special teams value early in his career.

Intangibles: C+

Played in a wide open read-option offense and will have to adapt to an NFL running game. Will not be able to remain as a feature back in the NFL, and small frame could be susceptible to injury. Was a two year contributor, and the feature back for his final season. Has tread left on his tires but carried the ball a lot in his junior season. Had over 100 carries in the final three games of the season.

Red Flags: System Player

Bottom Line: Tre Mason saved his best football for last, really coming on in the final quarter of the season and establishing himself as one of the premiere college rushers in the nation. In my eyes, Mason is the best runner in this year’s class, which lacks a legitimate first-round selection. Mason could have been a lottery pick a decade ago given his electric running style, but the problem is that he is a pure rusher who lacks any real third down value. However, Mason possesses the ability to develop a viable third down skillset and become the number one option in a one-two punch backfield.

Comparison: Ray Rice

Grade: 8.8 (2nd Round)
