Falcons Sign Corner/Returner Javier Arenas

Former Bears returner Devin Hester is visiting the Falcons today, but Atlanta may or may not entertain that thought. It has been reported that Atlanta has signed Cardinals corner and returner Javier Arenas to a one-year deal.

Arenas, 26, has played most of his career with the Chiefs. In Kansas City, he has put up 115 tackles, 136 combined tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions. With the Cardinals last year, he put up 11 tackles (12 combined), and one sack.

As a return man, Arenas has not yet scored a touchdown. However, he’s also put up a total of 1,035 yards on 106 attempts on punt returns and 1,541 on 73 attempts on kickoffs. So he’s got good and bad aspects, making this deal with Atlanta a low risk-high reward situation.

With Devin Hester still in Atlanta, I suspect the Falcons will try to make Javier Arenas focus on being a corner in order to pursue Hester into signing with the team. If the team manages to also sign Hester, the Falcons special teams’ unit will have considerable depth.

We shall see what happens, but things are starting to look good for the Coca-Cola capital of the world, especially when it comes to the return game.
