Athleticism: A

Second only to Jadeveon Clowney as a size-speed-strength athlete. Moves incredibly well for as a large a frame as he has at the linebacker position. Has no trouble getting to the sideline. Goes from zero to sixty in a flash and has freakish explosion. Plays hard and fast in pursuit. Can chase down and outrun 4.40 players.

Power: A+

Is a force of nature against the run and taking on blocks. Has incredible upper body power to rock back tight ends and linemen alike on contact. Rarely is gotten the better of and makes it look easy even against NFL caliber opponents. Accelerates off of blocks and is difficult to impede his progress upfield. Cut blocks don’t stop him. Gets low to take on blocks and has plenty of pop in his punch.

Technique: B+

Strong, heavy tackler. Forced sixteen fumbles in his career and delivers jarring hits without having a lane to close. Is a strip-sack artist. Is not the best tackler in space and had some trouble wrapping up the  more dynamic athletes he faced.

Third-Down: B+

Surprising ability to play coverage. Gets physical with receivers and can press one receiver and can go cover another. Is an intimidator in the middle of the field and receivers seemed to have trouble maintaining focus going over the middle against the Bulls. Very good pass rusher as a 43 linebacker. Converts speed to power and plays on his feet with the burst and explosion to collapse the pocket. Lacks a pass rush arsenal. Flashed a swim move, but needs to vary his plan of attack in order to become a dominant 34 rush linebacker or 43 end.

Intangibles: B+

Strong motor and plays with a lot of effort, consistently making an impact. Has a strong football IQ and can sniff out and blow up screens. Was an impact player at Buffalo for four years and elevated his play against superior competition. Outstanding career production, even for a non-AQ player. Team captain and three-time first-team All-MAC selection.

Red Flags: Level of Competition.

Bottom Line: Arguably the most dominant defensive player in all of college football last year, Mack has all the tools to be a perennial All-Pro and would not surprise me one bit if he winds up in Canton one day based upon his college film. Despite playing at one of the most anonymous schools in the FBS Mack’s senior season was characterized by a meteoric rise from an electric performance against Ohio State to unofficially running as low as a 4.35 at Buffalo’s pro day. Possessing the skillset to play a number of positions, and in any defense, Mack should give Jadeveon Clowney a run for his money as the top prospect in this draft class.

Comparison: Clay Matthews

Grade: 10.4 (Rare Talent/Top 5 Pick)
