Athleticism: C
Has enough range to get to the sideline on outside runs. Can change directions well for his size and can sidestep blockers. Does not have great foot speed down field and is more of a lateral player. Can overrun the ballcarrier in pursuit.
Power: B-
Not afraid to play the run. Will mix it up and take on blocks. Flashes the ability to slip blocks and immediately bring down the ballcarrier. Good balance to avoid cut blocks. Does not play much behind the line of scrimmage, but occupy and stalemate blockers.
Technique: C+
Makes the majority of his tackles below the waist. Arrives at the ballcarrier with some pop, but is not a dangerous striker. Plays on his heels as a tackler too much and needs to be more assertive engaging the ballcarrier. Could play with more hand fight to disengage from blocks and hold up receivers in coverage.
Third-Down: C+
Has an excellent first step on the blitz and can turn the corner on the outside. Has the foot speed to pressure the QB. Experienced in coverage. Is decent on short zone drops, but is unable to play tight coverage. Gives up the underneath pass, and is not explosive enough to close on the ball or the receiver. Can be out-quicked after the catch and has trouble bringing down receivers in space.
Intangibles: C+
Made the calls for the Bearcats defense. Shows the ability to play smart but can overrun the play at times. Could up his intensity level on the field and play with a hotter motor. Two year starter, and only saw the field once prior to that. Prolific tackler but did not make many impact plays.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: While the tackle numbers are impressive, Blair’s game on film does not jump out as that of a future starter. Blair lacks exceptional traits, but is well-rounded enough that he can stick as a backup and can contribute on special teams. His relative inexperience suggests that he has some upside and can outplay his draft slot.
