Arm: A
Has a laser arm. Throws 55 yard bombs on a rope. Throws deep outs with ease. Has elite velocity and should have one of the better throwing arms in the NFL as a rookie. More of a thrower than a passer. Has long arms which makes it difficult to throw the ball quickly. Requires a little more time than most to get rid of the ball.
Accuracy: D+
Is not very accurate. Placement is erratic, and will require open receivers to extend for the football. Shows he can hit the deep man at least as well as the underneath. Given his passing trajectory, closer passes give him more difficulty. Showed the ability to throw with better touch in 2013. Throws a lot of low passes, and does not have very good trajectory on passes as a tall QB. Throws a heavy football and receivers seem to have difficulty corralling his passes.
Athleticism: B
Is very quick given his large build. Is strong and can be difficult to bring down for a sack. Will lower his head and can push a pile. Started his career with the Hokies as a TE, and could convert back like D.C. Jefferson formerly of Rutgers. Has long arms and huge mitts to be a viable receiving target. Absolutely blew up star freshman Myles Jack on a run in the Sun Bowl, but got knocked out of the game 3 plays later by Jordan Zumwalt.
Intangibles: C-
Despite working with QB guru Scot Loeffler this past season, still shows very poor and erratic footwork throwing, though appeared to show some improvement. Did not show much as a decision maker, and for as intelligent and hardworking a person as he is, does not seem to transfer it onto the football field. Is extremely tough and durable, making 40 consecutive starts to finish his career with the Hokies. Never really had the production of a top draft pick. Had a very poor TD/INT ratio. Never really showed much development, which is a serious concern.
Red Flags: Raw
Bottom Line: An enigmatic talent, Thomas has plenty of room to improve before he’s ready to take a snap on an NFL field, but will get a chance due to the rare skillset he has. It’s hard for any QB he can’t throw an accurate ball, let alone make sound decisions, to have success in the NFL and I’m not sold on the fact that any of that will change in the near future for Thomas. However, some team will likely groom him to play in a vertical offense, but will never be trusted as a starter.
