Arm: A

Has an excellent arm. Can sling it 60+ yards, but does require space and momentum to do so. Throws a tight spiral, and can fit passes into windows, and make sideline throws without issue. Could throw an even better ball with improved mechanics. Has a very quick release and makes throwing the football effortless more times than not. Will change up his arm angle when necessary, but is not a technical flaw.

Accuracy: C+

Accuracy is not as good as numbers would indicate. Made many easy throws, inflating his completion percentage. Did not have to attempt many but showed above average deep accuracy. Has good touch for endzone passes. Throws a fairly catchable ball for the velocity at which it comes out of his hand. Footwork is an issue that needs to be cleaned up. Can throw off his back foot at times, but more often will throw off balance. Leans back to throw and does not follow through with his hips. Seems to be floating when making throws and needs to get his feet set.

Athleticism: C+

Reportedly runs a mid-4.5 40 yard dash. Does not take off often, but is able to pick his spots. Has good pocket awareness and will get rid of the ball rather than take the sack. Accuracy and arm strength  will suffer when moving outside of the pocket.

Intangibles: B-

Generally a poised player. Struggled mightily against pressure, however. Played in Tim DeRuyter’s spread offense where he did not have to take snaps from under center, threw a number of screens and short passes, and made fairly simple reads. Difficult to grade how good his field vision and decision-making is, given where and for whom he played. Did not fare well against mid- to upper-level BCS teams, but neither did many other star QBs who came from mid major programs. Is a very intelligent and mature player. Has good athletic bloodlines, for whatever it’s worth.

Red Flags: System Player, Level of Competition

Bottom Line: Going into the full film evaluation, I had Carr rated as an early-/mid-first round pick. What really swayed his grade is his inability to play against pressure. While the Las Vegas Bowl vs. USC was an expected disappointment, the San Diego State game raised huge concerns. If Carr can’t get in rhythm and throw accurately against non-AQ talent under pressure, he likely won’t be able to do so against NFL players, without stellar line play. All things considered, I still think highly of Carr and his potential to develop into a great QB, but the odds grow thinner as a result. Would thrive in a vertical offense that can take advantage of his arm.

Comparison: Matthew Stafford

Grade: 8.9 (2ndRound)
