Thiago Silva Charged With Aggravated Assault, Released By UFC

A bizarre day ended early Friday with Thiago Silva sitting in a Broward County, Florida Jail, and being held without bond.  After his bond hearing Friday morning, Silva was booked on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer without violence for an alleged incident that occurred Thursday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  The charges follow an alledged standoff with police on Thursday.

While the attempted murder counts were thrown out by Justice Hurley for lacking probable cause during the hearing on Friday morning, the remaining bookings became official charges, and Silva is being held without bail.  Prosecutors convinced the judge that Silva was a flight risk, and that he could go to Brazil and never return.

According to police SWAT teams were needed when an armed suspect entered a jiu-jitsu training gym in Oakland Park, Florida known the Pablo Popovitch Mixed Martial Arts Academy.  The suspect turned out to be Silva, who evaded police and then went and locked and barricaded himself in his home.

Popovitch is the trainer of Thaysa Silva, the estranged wife of Thiago Silva, and a  competitive black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  The Silvas seperated in 2012, and it is said that Popovitch and Thaysa Silva are now dating.

UFC president Dana White had only a brief comment on Friday speaking to TMZ. “This guy will never fight in the UFC, again.” White declined further comment until he had more information.

The UFC released the following statement later: “The Ultimate Fighting Championship has terminated the contract of Thiago Silva effective immediately.”
