Never In Doubt: Seahawks Take Super Bowl XLVIII

It was supposed to be a competitive Super Bowl, but this game was never in doubt.  Whether it was the Seahawks winning the coin toss and choosing to defer, the opening snap of the game going over Peyton Manning’s head and into the endzone for a safety just 12 seconds into the game, the Seahawks scoring points on each of their first three offensive possessions, Malcolm Smith returning an interception for a touchdown, a 22-0 halftime lead, Percy Harvin returning the second half touchdown for a touchdown, or the Seahawks defense and the relentless pressure put on the Broncos offense, there was never a glimmer of hope for the Broncos in this game.  Seattle dominated from start to finish, putting a stranglehold on the game and never letting go.  It all led to a 43-8 victory for the Seahawks and the title of World Champions.

Malcolm Smith went from a backup linebacker at the beginning of the season to Super Bowl MVP.  His 69 yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter, all but sealed the game for the Seahawks as they took a 22-0 lead.  He would add nine tackles over the course of the game to pad his resume for the award.  It was the second straight game with Smith making a huge play for Seattle as he was the player who caught the ball that Richard Sherman tipped on the infamous last gasp pass by Colin Kaepernick in the NFC Championship.

Still in a dominating game like this, there were many huge performances for the Seahawks, and naming just one MVP must have been difficult for voters.

Russell Wilson became the third youngest quarterback ever to win the Super Bowl.  He was coolly efficient going 18-25 for 208 yards passing and two touchdowns.  He also added 26 yards rushing.

Percy Harvin had 137 all purpose yards, including returning the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown.  If there was any hope left for the Broncos after the Smith touchdown, surely Harvin’s return killed it off.

The entire “Legion of Boom” secondary for the Seahawks was brilliant.  Richard Sherman and company were causing problems for the leagues highest scoring offence, and the best passing attack ever, all night long.  Meanwhile Chris Clemons and the Seahawks defensive line was often in Broncos backfield putting pressure on Peyton Manning.

Overall, the game ended a nice run of very competitive Super Bowl games, and was one of the most dominating performances of recent years.  Congrats go out to Seattle on a well-deserved championship.
