White Sox Sign Scott Downs

The Chicago White Sox have added a lefty specialist to the bullpen, inking free agent reliever Scott Downs to a one-year contract.  The team officially announced the move on their twitter and facebook accounts following the completion of a mandatory physical by Downs.

The deal will pay Downs $3.75 million in 2014.  The club option for 2015 is worth $4.25 million with a $250,000 club buyout.

“Downs provides us with some balance to our bullpen and another veteran arm for Robin to call upon late in games,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager in a statement released by the club.  “Scott’s impact will not only be felt on the field, but given his makeup and leadership skills it will be felt in the clubhouse and bullpen as well.”

Downs, most recently with Atlanta, is coming off a 2013 season in which he posted a 4-4 record with 26 holds, a 2.49 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP and 37/19 K/BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings pitched over 68 appearances in a season split between the Los Angeles Angels and the Atlanta Braves.
