Padres Sign Joaquin Benoit To A Two-Year Deal

The San Diego Padres have beefed up their bullpen, signing free agent right-hander Joaquin Benoit to a two-year deal, worth $15.5 million.  The deal also has a vesting option for a third year at $8 million provided that Benoit finishes 55 games in the 2015 season.

The 36-year-old Benoit was the closer for the Detroit Tigers in the second half last season, when he saved 24 games in 26 chances. Overall he made 66 appearances for the Tigers in 2013, posting a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings pitched.

In 541 career appearances over 12 MLB seasons he has a 4.11 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, and 37 saves.  However it would appear that Benoit is getting better with age as he has posted an ERA below his career average in each of the last four seasons.

However Benoit allowed a grand slam to David Ortiz in game two of the American League Championship Series, changing the tide of the series, and eventually leading to Detroit’s ouster from the playoffs.

It would appear that Benoit will begin his career in San Diego as the primary set-up man for closer Huston Street.  He is expected to replace setup man Luke Gregerson, who was traded to Oakland for outfielder Seth Smith.

The Tigers signed Joe Nathan to a two-year deal earlier in the off-season replacing Benoit as their closer.

To make room for Benoit on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated minor league right-hander Adys Portillo for assignment.
