Justin Morneau to Rockies, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Marlins Latest Free Agent Moves

For a Tuesday in December, before Baseball’s Winter Meetings have even started, its been an incredibly busy day on the MLB Hotstove.  We have seen trades and signings galore today, and we’ve got two more to report.

The Colorado Rockies were looking for a replacement for Todd Helton at first base.  They have found their man with former AL MVP Justin Morneau inking a 2-year $13 million deal with the club.

The 32-year-0ld Morneau hit .259/.323/.411 with 17 home runs and 77 RBIs in 159 games split between the Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates last year.  He was part of a mid-season trade as the Pirates pulled out all the stops in their quest to make the playoffs.

Earlier the Boston Red Sox signed A.J. Pierzynski meaning that free agent Jarrod Saltalamacchia would not be returning to Fenway Park.  He’s found his new home going from baseball’s oldest and one of its most classic stadiums, to the newest, most gaudy stadium in the majors.  Yes, Saltalamacchia has signed a 3-year $21 million deal with the Miami Marlins.

The 28-year-old Saltalamacchia, batted .273/.338/.466 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI across 470 plate appearances this past season for the Red Sox.  He is expected to take over as Miami’s starting catcher.
