Seahawks Proving Resiliency

It’s not over till it’s over, as the saying goes.

Seahawk fans everywhere are waking up with a few more grey hairs and definitely no voice after their team’s come-from-behind win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – but they are waking up to an 8-1 team for the first time in franchise history.  Yesterday’s 27-24 overtime win against the 0-8 Buccaneers was not for the faint-of-heart Seahawk fan, but in the end, the scoreboard had the Hawks in the lead and the 12th man was able to breathe easy with another triumph for their team.

Twitter feeds and Facebook posts were blowing up with disbelief as the Hawks entered the locker room at the half losing 21-7. Anyone who thought this game would be a walk in the park for the Seahawks was sadly mistaken.

And as fate would have it, Sunday was the 30th anniversary of the 1983 Seahawks – the Cinderella team who beat the odds making it to the playoffs for the first time in team history. Those great players who got it done when everyone doubted them were in the Clink watching – Steve Largent, Dave Krieg and the rest of the 83’ Hawks. They were all there watching and waiting for the proverbial clock to strike 12 and for the Hawks to do that thing they do – win.

The Buccaneers brought their running game and surely were stoked to seemingly be putting the beat down on the Seattle Seahawks, especially in their house. Was Russell Wilson’s home unbeaten record about to go down?  Well if the Buccaneers, or anyone else for that matter, thought the Seahawks were going to go down without a fight, well shame on them.

Even though the first half which was riddled with missed tackles, a really bad pass interference call and interceptions, during the second half this team slowly, and calmly began to come alive.

The tempo changed during the third quarter when Golden Tate redeemed himself for Monday night’s taunting by breaking several tackles and earning his nickname, “Showtime Tate,” with a 71-yard punt return.  Russell Wilson also came out during the second half as poised as ever and playing near perfect, completing 15 of 18 passes for 189 yards.  Doug Baldwin was a standout on Sunday and he was there to make the catch with 1:51 left in regulation to tie things up.

Even though the Bucs seemed to be running right through Seattle’s defense like they were Swiss cheese during the first two quarters, the Hawks were able to stop them from making any real drives during the second half.

And then there was Marshawn Lynch. Sidelined a bit during both halves due to his knee and stomach issues, Lynch turned on the Beastmode when it truly counted, by driving down the field for 51 yards in nine plays and getting the ball in easy field goal range for Steven Hauschka.  Hauscka came out and did his thing, putting that ball right through the uprights and a sigh of relief could be heard throughout Centurylink Field.

It was an ugly win to some, but in reality ,it was proof of how great this team is. Mistakes simply don’t take this Seahawks team out of the game. If there is time on the clock, don’t count them out.

Wins like these build character in a team and prove their resiliency. As Pete Carroll says, the game isn’t won during the first, second, or third quarters … it’s won in the fourth quarter and sometimes, it’s won in overtime.
