Three Records the Warriors Can Challenge this Season

There are many records that stand out to me that the Golden State Warriors have a legitimate shot of beating in the 2013-14 NBA season.

First, I think they can beat the Los Angeles Lakers record of 31.4 assists per game in the 1984-85 season. Last year, in 82 regular season games, the Warriors averaged 22.5 assists per game. However, they’ve added some new names to their arsenal: Andre Iguodala, Seth Curry, Toney Douglas, Jermaine O’Neal are some of the new names this year for the Warriors. Andre Iguodala has averaged 4.9 assists per game throughout his career with a high of 6.3 per game back in 2010 with the Philadelphia 76ers. With shooters all over the court, Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, Harrison Barnes, and not to mention a good shooting Center/Forward David Lee, you can expect new career highs this season for Andre. Seth Curry averaged 2.3 assists per game at Duke from 2010-13. Both Seth and Andre’s assists totals can easily up this team past 31 per game, and with Coach Mark Jackson you can expect plenty of unselfish basketball. Mark Jackson averaged 8 assists per game in his career and totaled 10,334 assists in his 17 seasons as a player. With numbers like that from a coach, you can only expect Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson, and Seth Curry will have great numbers this year passing the ball.

The next record I see the Warriors flirting with is the record for most points per game in one season. The record is held by the Denver Nuggets in 1981-82 when they averaged 126.5 points per game. Now this may seem like a crazy record that teeters on untouchable nowadays with how good some defenses are, but bear with me. Last year, the Warriors averaged 101.2 points per game. And with shooters like Iguodala, a healthy Steph Curry and more experience, the Warriors have a good shot at beating, or getting real close to, the record for most points per game in one season by a team.

The third and final record I see the Golden State Warriors having a shot at taking down is the highest field goal percentage as a team in one season. The highest is 54% held by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1984-85 season. You might say, “wow, this guy must hate Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and that whole Lakers team”, but in reality I think that was the best team in the NBA during the 80s. The Warriors’ field goal percentage as a team last year was 50%, and with new shooter Andre Iguodala, a healthy Steph Curry and lights out 3-point shooter Klay Thompson, they can very well set a new record for field goal percentage as a team.

To review:

There are three records that really stand out to me that the young Golden State Warriors can potentially beat. The most assists per game in one season held by the 1984-84 Lakers can be beaten by this team because they have a coach who is ranked 3rd on the NBA career assist leaders. The chemistry has also gone up for the Warriors since the beginning of last year. The most points per game in a season is held by the Denver Nuggets in 1981-82 when they averaged 126.5 per game. Warriors can break this due to good shooting by Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, David Lee and others. If the Warriors can get good looks all season and convert, not only can they beat the record for most points per game in one season, they can beat the record for highest field goal percentage as a team in one season. The record is 54% by the 1984-85 Lakers and this year’s Warriors can beat this record easily.
