Cuban Defector Alexander Guerrero Hires Scott Boras

There were a number of rumors last week that Cuban defector Alexander Guerrero was set to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  That now appears to not be the case as the short stop/ second base prospect has signed on with Scott Boras and the Boras Corporation and will be accepting bids from any MLB team that is interested in the 26-year-old.

Guerrero, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound vet of Serie Nacional, Cuba’s top baseball league, has mostly played shortstop, but he’s also said to be a capable second baseman.  He was a two-time all-star with Las Tunas.  Guerrero hit .290/.402/.576 with 21 home runs in 328 plate appearances in his final season in Serie Nacional.  With the number of teams who need capable middle infielders, there very well could be a bidding war for his services.

Guerrero defected from Cuba earlier this year, establishing residency in Haiti and had been training in the Dominican Republic. Major League Baseball announced that Guerrero was was a free agent in July, but he did not receive the proper work permits from the U.S. government until until Sept. 6 allowing him to actually sign a contract with a MLB team.

Guerrero is known for a powerful bat and for being speedy on the basepaths.  He worked out for MLB teams at the Dodgers’ complex in the Dominican Republic in July.
