Washington Wizards sign Al Harrington

The Washington Wizards have signed big man Al Harrington to a one-year deal at the NBA’s veteran minimum.  The 33-year-old center/power forward is coming off a season where he played in just 10 games for the Orlando Magic due to recurring knee issues.

Last season, Harrington had what was thought to be a relatively minor surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.  Following the surgery he developed a serious staph infection which kept him out of the lineup for most of the year.

“Al’s all-around game and reputation as a leader make him a solid fit with our team,” Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld said in a released statement. “He will give us additional depth and experience in the frontcourt, the ability to stretch defenses and another proven veteran in the locker room.”

Two years ago in Denver, Harrington he averaged 14.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while averaging just 27.5 minutes on the floor.  He was used as a “stretch 4” and shot 33.3% from three point range.

“Just watching the way they finished the year when they were healthy, I just feel like this is a great opportunity where I could come in, help and try to push them over the top,” Harrington said at his introductory press conference. “The talent that’s on the roster with the guys that got a little bit of experience, with the young guys, I think it’s a good mix. Adding me to it, I can definitely help these guys.”

The 33-year-old Harrington is a 15 year NBA veteran who has played for the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, and Orlando Magic over his NBA career.
