Portland Trailblazers sign Mo Williams

The Portland Trailblazers have signed veteran point guard Mo Williams to a two year contract worth $5.6 million.  The second year of the contract is a player option.  Williams spent last season with the Utah Jazz.

Mo Williams confirmed the deal when he wrote on his Twitter:

Portland here I come!!!!!! #playoffs

Williams is expected to backup last season’s star rookie Damian Lillard.  The Jazz will also have the option to use both guards at times.

Williams averaged 12.9 points and 6.2 assists per game in a little over 30 minutes per game last season for the Jazz before an injury cut his season short at just 46 games. He shot 43 percent from the field and 38 percent from three point range with a win share of 1.8 and a 14.4 PER.

The 30-year-old Williams is a 10 year NBA veteran who is now joining his 5th NBA team.  He was an all-star when he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Williams has a career average of 13.8 points and 5.0 assists per game on 44 percent shooting from the field.

Portland is using its Mid-Level Exemption to the Salary Cap in making this deal for Williams.  He becomes the 15th player under contract with the Trailblazers.
