Spurs Shipping Out

Spurs have already released William Gallas, loaned and sold some youngsters and have recently sold Steven Caulker.  Add Clint Dempsey to the list, as the American was sold to MLS side Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

Gareth Bale has been rumoured to be leaving for Real Madrid for an astronomical fee that seems to fluctuate with the wind, but will most certainly break records if it goes through.

So, with a busy window in full swing, how many good choices have Spurs made so far?

Gallas was released after a very indifferent season where the other centre backs outshone the veteran. He tried his hardest, but cracks appeared in those walls he tried to hold. Releasing Gallas was inevitable. We have too much class at CB and him staying at the club was holding back our younger defenders from getting first team experience.

When Gallas left, I thought our young English defender Steven Caulker could get some game time. Behind the pecking order of Jan Vertonghen, Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul apparently Caulker did not have the same opinion as me. Kaboul returning from injury probably forced Caulker’s hand on moving out into another BPL team where he would simply get a lot more game time.  So, Caulker has been sold for £8 million to Cardiff. It was a sad day for some of us Spurs fans, as the academy graduate was dubbed “the next Ledley King”, and we all expected him to stay and live up to that title. Though this news was smothered and dampened by all the Bale rumours flying about, it was a day that we let a good defender go.

This now leaves us with three centre backs; two of which are currently injured. So was this a wise idea to let Caulker go without getting a replacement?  Well, I think we did try to sign a replacement in the form of Romanian Vlad Chiriches. The deal reportedly fell through and we haven’t heard much since. In the end we got a good price for Caulker who may or may not be worth that in a few years time.  He wanted guaranteed game time and so Spurs let him get what he wanted. Goodbye, Caulker.

Now, I’m not going to mention Gareth Bale as I’m pretty tired of hearing about the rumours that are dominating Twitter. There are a hundred sites out there talking about the rumored sale of Bale, and until things become official one way or another there really isn’t more to say.

Instead, let’s talk about the American, Dempsey.

Clint Dempsey arrived on deadline day as a sort of cheap transitional player from Fulham, with plenty of Premier League experience and a good habit of scoring goals. He had a pretty good season with us, scoring some vital goals against United to help us secure four points from the Reds in great style. He did have a good season, but he didn’t look totally at his best at all points. Now, with Spurs’ new transfer of Roberto Soldado, Dempsey’s time was up. Getting older, he is keeping the likes of Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Siggurdson off the pitch. Dempsey did play in all sorts of positions last year, but now it is time for the younger lot to fill those position(s). A deal to Seattle has been made, and I support that transfer. After another season I don’t think his value would have increased any. It was time for our American to go.  Good luck.

So we’re making a lot of moves on the transfer market, so let’s hope we’re making the right ones.
