Edinson Cavani Joins PSG

Paris Saint-Germain have made another big splash in the transfer market.  The Ligue 1 side acquired Edinson Cavani from Napoli for a French Record Transfer fee of €64 million, breaking the record of €60 million set earlier this summer when AS Monaco acquired Falcao from Athletico Madrid.

Cavani was the top scorer in Serie A last season, scoring 29 goals for Napoli. He helped lead Napoli to the Italian Cup title in 2012 and to a runner-up finish in the Scudetto, and a Champions League spot, this year.

“The arrival of Edinson Cavani demonstrates the ability of the club to attract the best players in the world,” said PSG’s president, Nasser al-Khelaifi.

“The player, seduced by our project, is pleased to join an ambitious club and eager to take on new challenges. We are particularly pleased to offer the Parisian public a player of immense talent and one who is coveted everywhere.”

Cavani is the latest big money signing by PSG, who have acquired Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marco Verratti, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lucas Moura, Javier Pastore and Thiago Silva in the past couple of years.  Cavani and Lavezzi were an impressive pair together at Napoli, and the hope is that the chemistry will carry over, along with new chemistry formed between Cavani and Ibrahimovic, PSG’s top scorer last season.

The big money additions led PSG to winning the Ligue 1 title, but have not translated to Champions League success.  It is up to new coach Laurent Blanc to find a way to get his high priced squad to mesh into a major threat to the other top sides in Europe.

Cavani had long been rumored as a major name in this summer’s transfer window, also being linked to Chelsea and Manchester City.
