Ahmad Bradshaw left the New York Giants this offseason, and has been looking for a new team for several months now. After lukewarm initial interest things really heated up in recent days, culminating in the two time 1000 yard rusher signing with the Indianapolis Colts.
Bradshaw had been visiting the Colts, when rumors surfaced that the Patriots were also interested in the services of the former New York Giants running back. At that point, one of the weirdest contract negotiations I’ve ever seen took place on twitter.
Colts Owner Jim Irsay tweeted the following which apparently was meant for at Bradshaw’s agent Drew Rosenhaus:
“Hey Drew..I’m upside down, after this Hip Replacement Surgery, but the right hand can still scoop a pile of SERIOUS Coin, from Ft Knox-Let’s GO.”
Rosenhaus responded to Irsay by tweeting the following:
“@JimIrsay wishing you a speedy recovery. We would like to get a deal done with you as well. Hopefully happens soon.”
And so we got our first glimpse inside the world of NFL contract negotiations, courtesy a drugged up owner, and twitter.
Today news broke that Bradshaw had indeed signed with the Colts, and the confirmation was of course provided by Drew Rosenhaus via twitter:.
“@JimIrsay pleasure doing business with your organization . Ahmad is excited about being be a Colt!”
And so the two time SuperBowl Champion is officially headed to Indianapolis.
Bradshaw is expected to compete with Vick Ballard for the number 1 job in the Colts backfield. He is coming off surgery to repair a broken foot, and his ability to recover will likely go a long way into determining exactly how much playing time he is able to get. If he can get on the field, he will provide Andrew Luck and the Colts offence with yet another weapon.
The deal is for one year and is worth a maximum value of $2.0 million. It breaks down as a $250,000 signing bonus, $1.1 million in base salary, and $650,000 in per game roster bonuses.
