NFL to make Choice on Superbowl L and Superbowl LI on Tuesday

NFL owners will meet on Tuesday to decide the sites for Superbowl L, and Superbowl LI (50 & 51 for those who don’t understand Roman Numerals).  The games, scheduled to be played in February 2016, and February 2017 have been hotly contested by 3 sites.

Bidding for the historic 50th edition of the big game is down to San Francisco and South Florida.

The San Francisco bid plans to play the game at the 49ers new stadium which is currently under construction and should be ready for the 2014 Season.

Meanwhile the South Florida based bid was for Sun Life Stadium in Miami and was hoping that proposed stadium renovations would be approved by a state referendum, and be in place for the big game.  Unfortunately that will not be the case as the Florida legislature has allowed the renovation plans to die on the floor, without a vote.

The loser of the Superbowl L vote will get a second chance, as it will be a finalist against Houston’s bid. The Texans home of Reliant Stadium is hoping to be the home of Superbowl LI.

Northern California has only hosted 1 previous Superbowl, as the 1985 game was held at Stanford Stadium.

Miami has hosted 10 previous Superbowls, tied with New Orleans for the most Superbowls hosted. Miami last hosted the Superbowl in 2010.

Houston hosted the 2004 game, the second game to be held in the city, and first at Reliant Stadium.

The next Superbowl, Super Bowl XLVIII, will be played on February 2nd, 2014 in Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Super Bowl XLIX will be played at University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals in February 2015. It was originally scheduled for Arrowhead Stadium, but plans fell through.
