Frank Lampard signs for One More Year at Chelsea

Its been a big week for Chelsea, as the West London club brought home their second European Trophy in as many years, winning the Europa League Final 2-1 over Portuguese Club Benfica on Wednesday Night.

After the game, stories broke that the team had re-signed club legend Frank Lampard for one more season.  Lampard had captained Chelsea in the game, as John Terry was not available.

Earlier in the week Lampard, who has spent 13 seasons with the club, became Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer.  His brace against Aston Villa, led Chelsea to a key come from behind victory, and 3 important points in the race for 3rd place in the EPL and the automatic qualifying spot for the Champions League that said spot entails.  The goals also gave him 203 career goals for Chelsea, moving him 1 ahead of Bobby Tambling as the highest scorer in club history.

Lampard, 34, had been rumored to be leaving the club for months before this extension was announced.  The most popular rumor had him moving to MLS and becoming a designated player for the Los Angeles Galaxy, effectively replacing David Beckham who left the club after the 2012 MLS Cup.

Lampard is reportedly taking a pay cut, and lesser role to stay with the club next year.  However he is still a valuable player, and should provide both leadership and effective play helping Chelsea in their 2013-14 campaign.

Lampard joined Chelsea on a transfer from West Ham United in 2001 and has gone on to win 11 trophies with the club including the Champions League, the Europa League, three Premier league titles, four FA Cups and 2 League Cups. Lampard was also named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 2005. Lampard will go down as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, and is arguably the greatest.
