Major ATP Calendar Shake-Up: Paris Masters to Become Final Cutoff for 2026 ATP Finals Qualification

The ATP Tour is set for a major change heading into the 2026 season, as the cutoff for Nitto ATP Finals qualification will now be the Rolex Paris Masters, not the tournaments following it.

In an informal statement on social media, ATP’s Simon Higson confirmed the update, writing: “Reminder of an update coming into play from 2026: points in the week following Paris will only count towards the Race for the following year. So the Race for qualification will finish in Paris.”
Had this rule already been in place, it would have directly affected the 2025 battle for Turin. Seeking the final qualification spot, Lorenzo Musetti has taken a late wild card into the ATP 250 in Athens, where fellow qualifier Novak Djokovic is also competing.

Impact on Players and Scheduling

The change significantly improves the structure of the season’s final stretch. With the ATP Tour now spanning nearly 11 months, setting the final cutoff at the last Masters 1000 event feels both fair and practical. It increases the stakes in Paris while ensuring every player has had more than enough chances to qualify across the season.

In recent years, top players have often used last-minute wild cards into smaller post-Paris tournaments as a safety net, withdrawing once they secured or lost their qualification spot. This year, Daniil Medvedev got a late wildcard for Metz before withdrawing once he was mathematically out of contention. It is quite likely that Musetti would have done the same in Athens had Felix Auger-Aliassime not overtaken him in the qualification race.

A Positive Step for Fans and the Tour

This practice often frustrates fans who buy tickets to see their favorite stars, only for them to withdraw days later. It also blocks opportunities for younger players or veterans nearing retirement who would benefit from those main-draw spots.

By finalizing the Race to Turin at Paris, the ATP has effectively created a cleaner, fairer, and more exciting qualification process—one that restores meaning to the final Masters event and prevents unnecessary withdrawals in the weeks that follow.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
