Roger Federer is reportedly back on the tennis court, training hard and is eyeing a possible return to tennis at the 2022 Australian Open.
Darren Cahill, a respected television analyst for ESPN, former coach to Simona Halep and native Australian said on the Aussie TV program Sportsday that he’s “pretty sure” Federer will play in Melbourne in January.
The 20-time Grand Slam Champion underwent a third surgery on his knee after a strong run into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this year.
Tennis pundits and fans on social media once again predicted the end of the Swiss maestro’s career, even though Federer himself left the door very much open to another comeback.
The 2022 Australian Open has already been a swirl of controversy, with the Australian Federal Government and the Australian state of Victoria at odds over whether or not players should be required to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 this year.
Novak Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open a record nine times, has said that he will make a decision about playing down under after the vaccine and quarantine policy has been announced.
Now 40 years old, Federer has won the Australian Open six times, including memorable runs in 2017 and 2018.
The other member of the “Big 3” in tennis, Rafael Nadal, has said he is fully expecting to play the Australian Open in January. With the Big 3 tied at 20 Grand Slams apiece, this news about Federer puts even more of a spotlight on Djokovic and his vaccine decision.
