Due to its awkward placement in the WTA calendar, as a clay court event sandwiched between Wimbledon and the US hard court season, the WTA 250 event at Hamburg this week predictably doesn’t feature a very strong field, but it has still produced some very nice clay court tennis, with several players sensing a chance to go deep or even win the title. Thursday should be another good day of tennis in Germany. But who will advance at WTA Hamburg?

Mayar Sherif vs Elsa Jacquemot
Head-to-head: first meeting
Sherif has been on an absolute roll on clay lately, winning her last three tournaments on the surface (including two in the past two weeks) and now her first two matches at WTA Hamburg. She is on a fantastic winning streak, riding a massive wave of confidence and she is clearly the better player of the two on this surface, so her dream run should continue here.
Prediction: Sherif in 2
Oleksandra Oliynykova vs Leyre Romero Gormaz
Head-to-head: Oliynykova 1-0 Gormaz
On paper, it should be a close match, but Oliynykova is definitely the more consistent player of the two and should have the edge here. That said, it should definitely be a very close, with Gormaz definitely having enough to make things very difficult for Oliynykova. It should be a match decided by who executes better in key points.

Elina Avanesyan vs Yulia Putintseva
Head-to-head: Putintseva 2-0 Avanesyan
Putintseva has dominated this head-to-head so far and she has been playing very well on clay in recent weeks, only losing to the eventual champion in Bastad and Iasi in the past two weeks. Putintseva is definitely the better player of the two and all things considered she should be able to pull through at WTA Hamburg.

Paula Badosa vs Panna Udvardy
Head-to-head: Badosa 1-0 Udarvy
It looked like Paula Badosa’s great momentum would be halted after she was forced to retire in the Iasi final last week, but she showed no signs of physical issues in her first match issues and is therefore one of the favorites to go all the way this week. Her ranking isn’t even close to reflecting her skill and she should be able to win here with relative ease.
