First-round action begins at the WTA Hamburg Open with three main draw matches scheduled for Day 1. Former champion Anna Bondar gets her campaign underway, looking to halve the deficit in the head-to-head against Moyuka Uchijima. Former World No. 25 Anhelina Kalinina faces Top 100 debutant Kaitlina Quevedo. Who will reach the next round?
WTA Hamburg Day 1 Predictions
Nadia Podoroska vs Julia Stusek
Head-to-head: first meeting
Podoroska is well outside the Top 500, but 2026 has been a resurgent campaign for the former French Open semifinalist. She’s won a couple of ITF titles and has compiled 22 match wins. Stusek is the higher-ranked player in this matchup, sitting almost 100 spots above Pdorosola. But the German can’t quite match her opponent’s experience or pedigree on clay. Porodoska is poised to snap her three-match losing streak.
Prediction: Podoroska in 2
Anna Bondar vs Moyuka Uchijima
Head-to-head: Uchijima 2-0 Bondar
Uchijima won both meetings against Bondar, including a clay-court match in Oeiras. But that was three years ago. Bondar has developed into a much more confident clay-court player. The Hungarian has an excellent track record playing in Hamburg. She won the tournament on debut two seasons ago and was the runner-up last year, losing to an inspired Lois Boisson. Bondar’s heavier topspin and improved consistency should give her the edge in their third meeting.
Prediction: Bondar in 2
Anhelina Kalinina vs Kaitlin Quevedo
Head-to-head: first meeting
Kalinina is motoring into the Top 50. She sits just nine spots from re-establishing herself in the upper tier of the rankings after an injury-blighted 2025 season. But it’s been nearly a month since her last win at Tour level. Quievedo has touched the world’s Top 100 for the first time. The 20-year-old Spaniard continued her impressive rise with another deep run on clay, reaching the semifinals of the Bastad 125K. Last week, she defeated home favorite Elena Gabriela Ruse in Iasi and nearly took a set from Mayar Sherif. If the Spnaid strikes the ball as cleanly as she did in Iasi and holds up in extended rallies, she might spring an upset.
Prediction: Quevedo in 3
