>n this unusual part of the season, where you have a couple of clay court events sandwiched in between the grass season and the commencement of the American hard court swing, our attention turns to Austria, where the ATP 250 Kitzbühel kicks off with a bunch of players seeking some much-needed match wins. It might not be quite the A-list event or players involved, but it promises to be an engaging affair, and as always, we’re here to share insights and make predictions on how we think matches will unfold. So let’s get right into it!
ATP Kitzbühel Day 1 Predictions
Mariano Navone vs Alexandre Muller
Head-to-head: first meeting
The tenacious Navone has been having a bit of a downturn in results, having lost his last four matches. Kitzbühel gives him a great chance to hit the reset button in what is a field depleted of star quality. A further slice of luck pits him against a player who has had a torrid time in Muller. The Frenchman has lost his last nine matches in a row, barely winning any sets. On a surface that should make the Argentine comfortable, you’d expect him to take control of this match.

Lukas Neumayer vs Yannick Hanfmann
Head-to-head: Hanfmann 1-0
Hanfmann has been unable to string together a run of match wins for some time now. It makes it tricky to gauge his level despite him being a solid player when he’s on it. However, a defeat to a player of Neumayer’s ranking and quality should be a real low point, even in light of his current form. Hanfmann’s struggles make me believe that Neumayer might just about nick a set here, but that’s as far as I’ll go. I expect that, at some point, Hanfmann will find the quality and control to come out on top in this match.

Joel Schwaerzler vs Jurij Rodionov
Head-to-head: first meeting
Schwaerzler comes into this courtesy of a wild card and on the back of a really poor run of results. Rodionov, on the other hand, came through qualifying, which should serve him well, especially against a struggling player. He also managed to do so without dropping a set, which should be an additional morale-booster. As a spectacle, it’s unlikely this match-up will win any awards, but I can still see Rodionov putting on an efficient display to take this one.

Facundo Díaz Acosta vs Federico Cina
Head-to-head: first meeting
Another one of those matches where both players will fancy their chances. Also, recent form will be encouraging for both players as they’ve both gotten some good wins in recent weeks. It therefore sets up what should be a competitive match. As both players fight to take control of the match, there will be plenty of momentum shifts, and it will come down to who capitalises at critical junctures. This one is certainly not easy to call, but I’d lean toward Cina triumphing eventually.

Vit Kopriva vs Ignacio Buse
Head-to-head: Kopriva 1-0
After a torrid time on the grass that saw Kopriva struggle for wins, you can be sure he’d be glad to be back on his preferred clay. He also leads Buse in their head-to-head. However, make no mistake: this is not going to be an easy match for either of them, as it could quite easily go either way. I expect a tough day with both players getting a thorough workout. Three sets look nailed on here. That said, I’ll back Kopriva to get it done, but only just.
