It is no secret now that Serena Williams is back. Almost four years after famously “evolving” away from tennis, the legendary American is set to make her return to singles competition at the Wimbledon Championships next week.
After initially announcing that she would return only in doubles, Williams quickly changed her mind and also entered the singles event. Wimbledon duly accepted her request, awarding the seven-time champion a singles wildcard.
Serena Williams Draw Revealed
The wait to see Williams back on court in singles competition is almost over, as her draw for the Championships has now been revealed. Entering the main draw unseeded meant Williams could have faced any player from the very first round, including the world’s best.
The 23-time Major champion will begin her campaign against Australian youngster Maya Joint. Interestingly, Williams had already won seven Major titles by the time Joint was born.
A victory in the opening round could set up a second-round clash against Alexandra Eala, a matchup that would undoubtedly attract worldwide attention.
Her biggest challenge could await in the third round, where she is projected to face 2025 Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek. It would be the first-ever meeting between the two superstars.
Williams’ projected path through the Championships is as follows:
- R1: Maya Joint
- R2: Alexandra Eala/Renata Zarazua
- R3: Iga Swiatek/Karolina Pliskova
- R4: Jasmine Paolini/Clara Tauson
- QF: Elina Svitolina/Marta Kostyuk/Donna Vekic
- SF: Amanda Anisimova/Elena Rybakina
- F: Aryna Sabalenka/Coco Gauff/Mirra Andreeva
One thing is certain: no matter how far Williams goes in either singles or doubles, where she will partner her sister Venus Williams, all eyes will be on her as tennis welcomes back one of its most iconic figures.
With no expectations and everything to gain, it would not be surprising if the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion produced yet another run that captivated the sporting world.
