Casper Ruud enters the US Open 2025 singles draw in a not-so-confident state. The Norwegian took some time off after a shock second-round exit at the French Open earlier this year and hasn’t quite had any momentum whatsoever. However, he was a finalist in New York back in 2022. Should we expect him to impact the US Open draw over the next two weeks?
Can Casper Ruud Make an Impact at the US Open?
Post French Open 2025
Ruud returned to tennis action seeded first at the Gstaad Open. He won his opening round match but lost to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in three sets, failing to convert crucial break point chances. The focus then shifted to the North American hard court swing, which began with the Toronto Masters. Ruud hasn’t had much success in the Canadian Masters in the last three years, and that didn’t change with a straight set loss to Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16.
Matters became worse for the 2022 US Open finalist as he lost to Arthur Rinderknech in the first round at the Cincinnati Masters. It is safe to say Ruud will need an easy draw to gain much-needed confidence if he’s to reach the second week of the US Open and be competitive.
US Open Mixed Doubles
Ruud is one of the top players on the recently revamped US Open mixed doubles bandwagon. While the US Open treatment of mixed doubles this year is still hotly debated, Ruud has paired up with six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.
The pair is into the semifinals at the time of writing, and while the draw boasts of top players across the board, it remains to be seen if this helps Ruud settle into the US Open this year. In the couple of matches Ruud has played so far, he has looked calm and his ground strokes have the zip, especially on the forehand side. That being said, mixed doubles is unlikely to be any barometer of how Ruud performs at this year’s US Open.
Ranking Impact
Ruud reached the Round of 16 last year so an early exit may lead to him sliding down the rankings making it harder for him to get easy matches early on in tournaments. The Norwegian needs a good showing this week if he is to arrest his recent slide on the tour.
What’s next?
Ruud may potentially benefit from the best of five format as that will give him more time to settle into a match and correct any rustiness.
Expect Ruud to be one of the potential candidates for an early exit but the Norwegian has surprised before at the US Open by reaching the finals here in 2022 so it will be exciting to follow Ruud in the coming weeks.
