What’s Next For Casper Ruud After Early French Open Exit

Casper Ruud is out of the French Open 2025 after an unexpected second round defeat to Nuno Borges, 6-2 4-6 1-6 0-6.

Casper Ruud’s French Open Exit

Ruud had entered the French Open on the back of some solid results in the European clay court tournaments. He won the Madrid Masters and despite a drubbing by Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals in Rome, the Norwegian looked likely again to reach the second week at a minimum in the second slam of the year.

He coasted through his first round as we have grown accustomed to from him on this surface but what followed was a shock. Ruud started well in the second round taking the first set but troubles mounted for him as he called for a medical timeout after the third set.

The nature and the extent of the injury is still unknown but it did hamper his shotmaking as he was bageled in the final set. All credit to Ruud for finishing the match though in a true testament to his fighting spirit.

2025 Season So Far

Ruud’s 2025 season so far was not a great one. Before the clay court season started, he just had one final appearance to his name, in Dallas. Perhaps that is exactly why this injury and loss is so disappointing for Ruud as he was ramping and peaking at the perfect time for him to have any chance of winning the French Open.

What’s Next For Casper Ruud?

Post the French Open, Ruud’s performance generally tapers off with grass courts not being his strong suit. His best result at Wimbledon is a second round appearance. However, the North American hard court season and the ATP Finals has seen Ruud perform better than the grass court season. The Norwegian reached the finals at the US Open and the ATP World Tour Finals in 2022.

Perhaps Ruud is not thinking about the rest of the season just as of now and his focus would be on the injury and whether he would need to take time off in 2025.

Ruud is not a person to give up easily so expect him to fight till the very end in every situation. Expect nothing less from him in this case either for any comeback from injury.
