Quite a few interesting matchups will take place on Day 1 of the 2025 WTA Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey, Mexico. Former finalist Marie Bouzkova takes on Zeynep Sonmez, while Jessica Bouzas Maneiro hopes to follow up her great performances in Montreal and Cincinnati. But most interesting will be the 11th career meeting between Maria Sakkari and Donna Vekic. Who do you think will come out on top?
WTA Monterrey Day 1 Predictions
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro vs Kamilla Rakhimova
Head-to-head: First meeting
It’s fair to say that Jessica Bouzas Maneiro is playing the best tennis of her career right now. She’s situated at a career-high ranking inside the Top 50 and just reached the quarterfinals in Montreal, followed up by the fourth round in Cincinnati. With such achievements she probably doesn’t need another US Open warm-up, but perhaps it’s best to strike the iron while it’s hot. Kamilla Rakhimova performed decently in these events but has been far more erratic than Bouzas Maneiro and will need to hope for a significant drop in level from the Spaniard.
Prediction: Bouzas Maneiro in 2
Marie Bouzkova vs Zeynep Sonmez
Head-to-head: First meeting
Marie Bouzkova likes this event and performed particularly well when she reached the final in 2020, losing to Elina Svitolina. The Czech recently won her first WTA Tour title in three years when she claimed the trophy in Prague before going over to Montreal and grabbing two more wins. She’s in form, and her defensive game could be too tough for Zeynep Sonmez to hit through. The Turkish woman isn’t known for having a particularly strong baseline game and might have issues finding that kind of firepower to put Bouzkova away.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 2
Maria Sakkari vs Donna Vekic
Head-to-head: Vekic 6-4
This is a head-to-head with many chapters over the years and now they’re writing a new one with Maria Sakkari sitting significantly lower in the rankings after her injury last year. Then again, the Greek has nothing to defend until the end of the season and has been slowly regaining her footing. In Montreal and Cincinnati, she ran into some of the best players on tour relatively early into the event. Her form has been getting better gradually and Donna Vekic poses less of a threat than somebody like Jessica Pegula or Jasmine Paolini right now.
Prediction: Sakkari in 3
