Alarm Bells for Jannik Sinner Ahead of US Open After Cincinnati Final Retirement

The 2025 Cincinnati Open final was billed as another clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but it ended almost before it began. After just five games, with Alcaraz leading 5–0, Sinner stunned the crowd by walking to his chair and retiring from the match. He later explained that he had been feeling unwell since the day before and simply could not go on.

“Usually I start with the opponent but today I have to start with you guys,” Sinner told the fans in a heartfelt on-court speech. “I’m super, super sorry to disappoint you. From yesterday I didn’t feel great. I thought I would improve during the night. It came up worse. I tried to come out and make it at least a small match but I couldn’t handle more. I’m very, very sorry for all of you. I know some of you on Monday maybe had to work or do something else, so I’m very, very sorry. Of course Carlos congrats. Another title. Not the way you wanted to win but it’s amazing what kind of season you’re producing. You and your whole team are doing amazing. Keep it up. I wish you only all the best for the U.S. Open and the rest of the season.”

For Alcaraz, the victory added another Masters 1000 title to his growing collection, along with 1000 ranking points and $1.124 million in prize money. More importantly, it put him within striking distance of reclaiming the No. 1 ranking. He now trails Sinner by just under 2,000 points heading into the US Open, where he is defending only 50 points from last year’s early exit.

Sinner’s situation, however, is far more precarious. As the reigning US Open champion, he must defend the full 2,000 points in New York. His abrupt retirement in Cincinnati, paired with the visible distress in his speech, raises serious concerns about whether he will be physically ready to defend his crown.

The final was meant to be a showcase of the sport’s two brightest young stars, but instead it left fans with more questions than answers. For Alcaraz, the win provides momentum at exactly the right moment. For Sinner, the next few days will be crucial. His hopes of holding off Alcaraz for the No. 1 spot–and of making another deep Grand Slam run–may hinge on whether Cincinnati proves to be only a brief setback or the start of a more long-term malady.
