Halle Open Quarterfinal Predictions Including Alexander Zverev vs David Goffin

Just eight men are left in contention at the Halle Open after a thrilling start to the week in Saxony-Anhalt. So far the tennis has been of the highest quality and all eight men will surely feel they have a real chance of winning the title. But who will reach the semifinals?

Halle Open Quarterfinal Predictions

Karen Khachanov vs Matteo Berrettini

Head-to-head: Berrettini 2-0 Khachanov

Matteo Berrettini has enjoyed quite the start to the grass-court season, having won all seven matches he has played on the surface so far in 2019. That included a run to the title at the Stuttgart Open, where he beat Karen Khachanov handily in the second round. That was his second victory over the Russian already this year after a 6-7 6-3 6-4 win in Sofia in February. As a result, he will surely head into this quarterfinal clash full of confidence.

But Khachanov has played some good ball so far at the Halle Open and looked impressively composed in a hard-fought 6-3 3-6 6-4 win over the big-hitting German Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 16. Both men boast plenty of power and short-sharp rallies look certain to be the order of the day. Both are also good servers, with Berrettini having been particularly inspired from the line recently. He has dropped serve just once in his last 15 sets and that dominance on his own deal should give him the foundations for another victory, though expect it to be close.

Prediction: Berrettini in three.

Borna Coric vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert

Head-to-head: Coric 2-2 Herbert

In surely the best match of the Halle Open so far, Borna Coric kept his title-defence alive by outlasting Joao Sousa 7-6 5-7 7-6 in a three-set thriller. Pierre-Hugues Herbert, meanwhile, won an entertaining clash against fellow serve-and-volleyer Sergiy Stahkovsky to book his place in the last eight. It was the Frenchman who won the first two matches in this rivalry, including in the Wimbledon qualifying five years ago, but Coric has claimed both their tour-level matches. The Croatian’s excellent movement and returning should enable him to keep Herbert pinned back, where he tends to struggle.

Prediction: Coric in two.

Roger Federer vs Roberto Bautista Agut

Head-to-head: Federer 8-0 Bautista Agut

This is not one of the best matches of the day. While on paper it might seem promising, with Federer facing another top player, this match always plays out the same way. Federer can get into the Spaniard’s service games and disrupt his rhythm. Bautista Agut, meanwhile, can do nothing to slow Federer down. Expect an easy win for the Swiss here.
Prediction: Federer in two.

Alexander Zverev vs David Goffin

Head-to-head: Zverev 2-1 Goffin

Alexander Zverev is not amongst the most natural grass-courters but he has typically played well at the Halle Open, reaching back-to-back finals in 2016 and 2017. He also comes into this year’s tournament in good form after winning the Geneva Open and reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros at the close of the clay-court season. Nor has he dropped a set in reaching the quarterfinals, dispatching the tricky Robin Haase and Steve Johnson in straight sets.

But he may be in for a stern test up against David Goffin. The Belgian made a scintillating start to his campaign by destroying eighth seed Guido Pella 6-1 6-1, though he was less convincing in a 4-6 6-4 6-3 win over Moldova’s Radu Albot. Nonetheless, his ability to take the ball on the rise and hit it with accuracy ensures he is always a dangerous opponent. But Zverev has been able to bully him in the past with his power and, backed by the German crowd, the second seed looks confident and focused. He may take some stopping this week.

Prediction: Zverev in three.
