Prem Round Seven: Newcastle Falcons host Exeter Chiefs at Kingston Park

The Newcastle Falcons' Kingston Park, as the Falcons face the Exeter Chiefs on Sunday

When Newcastle Falcons host Exeter Chiefs this Sunday at 3:00pm GMT, it will be an interesting match as the Chiefs look to win their first road game of the Premiership this season, against a team that has not won a single game in the 2023/24 Gallagher Premiership Rugby season, the Falcons.

Newcastle Falcons (0-0-5)

The Falcons have lost six games in the Gallagher Premiership Rugby season so far. This includes losing to the Sale Sharks by a scoreline of 40-22. The game was closer than what the scoreline said, yet the Falcons gave up too many points at the end of the first and second half to the Exeter Chiefs and ended up losing the game.

The head coach of the Falcons, Alex Codling, talked about the positive performance of the Falcons (source: Newcastle Falcons YouTube Account):

“We got ourselves a really good position after 27 minutes 10-5 up we then find ourselves 26-10 down at halftime and you’ve got two choices. I thought the boys were magnificent second half a disappointment is at the end of 26-22 and we’ve obviously missed a few kicks today because a couple of tries right at the end it just score doesn’t look as it probably should do and that’s my frustration, but I mean overriding me. We’re training to one day, 13 changes, four players making their Gallagher Premiership debut, and an 18-year-old full-back, and I thought that was fantastic.”

The Falcons will now look to take some of the positive performance they displayed against Sale, with crucial Premiership Rugby home-field advantage at home against the Exeter Chiefs. Although an opposition that is standing much higher on the table than the Falcons now.

Exeter Chiefs (3-0-2)

The Exeter Chiefs are travelling to Newcastle on a high. They won a nail-biter last Sunday as they were victorious by one point against Gloucester Rugby.

A late game-winner kick by Henry Slade was the reason why the Chiefs emerged as winners at home.

As mentioned before, the Chiefs have not won a game on the road this season. However, they have a big opportunity to do that on Sunday against Newcastle, a team that still has not won a game this season.  This is what Player of the Match for Round Six, Joe Hawkins said about the Chiefs team in general (source: Exeter Chiefs Twitter Account):

“Obviously, we’re expecting a lot of ourselves, but there’s no pressure and there’s some really good, young boys coming through.”

Head-to-head – Newcastle Falcons v Exeter Chiefs

Looking at results from 2021 onwards, both teams have faced each other six times. The Chiefs have won four of them, including their most recent game against each other on March 11, 2023, by a scoreline of 23-11. However, the three previous games before that were determined by three points or less, which shows that a competitive game is likely when these two teams face off against each other.

This is what the Falcons player, Stephens, said about the game against the Chiefs and what challenges they bring:

“Obviously, they are a good team, how they come off the line,” Stephens said, “Just getting the ball out in the wide channels and playing good passes.”
