It has been announced that Nic White is to leave Exeter Chiefs as of today. The Australian was always set to leave the club at the end of his contract but with the current state of the season that has come around as of now.
White starred in Australia’s World Cup campaign and returns to the Brumbies to reignite his international career. The 26 capped scrum-half had vowed he would make his final season in Devon one to remember but that appears to have been taken away from him.
White Says Goodbye to Chiefs
In his time at Exeter, Nic White racked up almost 50 appearances for the club and scored some memorable tries in the process. He was, unfortunately, unable to bring any silverware to the club during his time in Exeter.
He played an important role in developing the likes of Stu Townsend and the Maunder brothers. Sam Hidalgo-Clyne is set to replace the Australian. However, it does seem that there is an opportunity there for an existing player to step up.
Nic White was granted leave from Exeter to go and play in the World Cup in Japan. White was extremely grateful to Director of Rugby Rob Baxter for offering him that opportunity.
He had hoped for a fond farewell tour at the end of the season. However, given that he was scheduled to leave the club in June and the Premiership Season will not be starting until the 15th August at the earliest it became apparent he has played his final game for the club.
White Reccomends Exeter to Any Player
He leaves the club behind with a strong endorsement for any player thinking about moving to South-West;
“if a player in the future asks me about coming to the Chiefs, I’d say ‘Jump at it!’
White went onto say that “I’ve matured as a person, both on and off the field” during his time at the club. He also went onto say how much he would be sad to no longer be playing at Sandy Park.
“Game days at Sandy Park are special, you just don’t see it at other places,” he explained. “Even when you come out before the game to warm-up, you run across the pitch in front of the library, they are there hours before kick-off and they start with the Tomahawk Chop. Every time I experience it, I still get goosebumps. I try to explain it to people at home, but I can’t do it justice. I’m just so glad that my family have got to come here and experience what game days are like.
Nic White will be remembered fondly at Exeter Chiefs but he now moves onto another chapter down under. This leaves Exeter with a bit of a conundrum at scrum-half. Lots of talent is available but are they ready to lead the side, only time will tell.
