If there was one name that didn’t fail to capture attention during the Super Rugby transfer window; it was Jordie Barrett.
Barrett signed with the Hurricanes for the 2017 Super Rugby season after turning down an offer from the Crusaders. Barrett will join his older brother, and 2016 IRB World Rugby Player of the Year winner, Beauden at the Wellington-based club.
Barrett has a lot of potential, as shown during last year’s Mitre 10 Cup. His reward was an apprentice role in the All Blacks squad for the Northern Tour. Barrett went on to win the Age Grade Player of the Year award in late 2016.
Barrett’s chances of regular selection remain slim. At best, Barrett will be a bench warmer for most of the season, but that doesn’t mean the 20-year old can’t make a serious impact when he gets the chance.
He is definitely one of the players to watch in Super Rugby this year. Why? Because he has already captured the attention of the All Blacks coaching team. That will provide the motivation to break out as the much anticipated British & Irish Lions tour looms. Confidence is also a major factor to success in any sport, and Barrett certainly has a lot of that too.
