New York Jets Week 16 Takeaways

What happened during the New York Jets and New England Patriots could hardly be called a contest. It was a thorough 41 point thumping of the Jets at the hands of Tom Brady and company. The Jets barely managed to get three points up on the board while the Patriots scored seemingly at will, with Brady sitting the fourth quarter.

Bryce Petty still has not Proved Himself

To some, Bryce Petty was the future of the Jets franchise, the second coming after Ryan Fitzpatrick floundered this year. But each time he has had a opportunity to prove himself to the team, he gets injured. This week Petty left the game in the first quarter after making a touchdown saving tackle from a Khiry Robinson fumble. With Christian Hackenberg inactive and Geno Smith on IR, that left Fitzpatrick to check into the game. Petty finished 0-3 with a interception. These kind of performances are not going to help his stock with the team. I know that the big hits are not his fault, last week in Miami when the offensive line made a mistake on the snap and left him wide open to that brutal hit, but he has to capitalize where he can.

The Jets Woes Continue

This was probably one of the worst games of the Jets season. Absolutely nothing went right for them. Between Petty getting knocked out in the first quarter and Fitzpatrick throwing two interceptions in relief, nothing else went right. The defense clearly got burned almost every single possession, giving up those 41 points. Offensively the Jets were just awful. Bilal Powell continues to be the only somewhat bright spot on the offense, rushing for 60 yards on 15 attempts. The receiving corp was disgraceful with a high of 30 yards, which is no way to win a game.

What’s Next for the Jets

I have always said this and will continue to say this, the Jets are an extremely prideful team. Even when the season is over they play hard especially against the Patriots. Unfortunately, this time they rolled over like a truly defeated team. The lack of heart and lack of grit was disturbing. A question that is on everyone’s mind is what comes next? How do the Jets come back from one of their worst seasons in years? The answer is relatively simple, nail down a solid quarterback. You cannot have a carousel at the quarterback position, without a consistent presence taking snaps its hard to build a team.

The Jets are a dumpster fire and the laughingstock of the NFL right now. The players know it, the coaches know it, and the fans know it. The offseason is going to make or break the Jets. Without decisive moves in free agency and the draft the problems will continue. The way the Jets played today can never happen again if they want to be taken seriously.
