The June 1st deadline for cap-related transactions has passed, with some big names still on the board. Who are some free agents that could interest the Tennessee Titans as they look to supplement their current core? They have several needs that still need resolving, including a glaring one at safety. According to Spotrac, the Titans currently have a little over $25 million they could play with.
Five Free Agent Positions The Tennessee Titans Should Target
Safety
Tennessee did not address its safety needs externally via the draft or free agency and is still looking for options. Fortunately, the safety market overflowed with high-quality players during the offseason. Players like Justin Simmons, Marcus Maye, and Eddie Jackson are still looking for jobs as we approach the end of OTAs. Maye even visited Nashville before the draft, so the interest is there. Despite his salary being a perceived obstacle, Simmons has been frequently mentioned as a target for Tennessee, and the franchise did talk with him. The organization will likely sign a veteran to start over the current starter at free safety, Elijah Molden. He’s better suited for a role at nickel cornerback.
Guard
Tennessee’s offensive line starters are pretty much set across the board. However, their depth is an issue, particularly at guard. There are a few names that could pique the interest of legendary offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Names like D.J. Fluker, Greg Van Roten, Halapouli Vaitai, and Mark Glowinski come to mind. GVR had a solid 2023, scoring an overall grade of 75.3 with a 77.4 pass block grade per PFF. However, he’s the oldest free agent guard on the market at 34 years old. Glowinski is another option as well. He is familiar with the Titans due to his previous stint in Indianapolis. Max Scharping could be another option, as he’s familiar with Brian Callahan’s system during his time in Cincinnati.
Receiver / Return Specialist
The Titans’ top three or four receivers (if you count Treylon Burks as an active member of this team) are established. However, it could get tricky once you get past the top three, as the depth isn’t ideal. The league has also emphasized the kick return aspect of special teams with new UFL-style rule changes. As a result, back-end depth receivers with return ability types will be in demand. Players like Jamal Agnew, Jakeem Grant, and Richie James could be intriguing adds to Nashville’s current crop of returners. Agnew is a familiar foe to the Titans, as he played for the Jaguars recently. James crossed over with GM Ran Carthon while the pair were in San Francisco. Grant hasn’t played in the league since 2021 but had workouts with the Eagles and Saints during the offseason.
Defensive Line
Tennessee’s defensive line is primarily set in stone but could use some reinforcements, as the depth is sorely lacking. Star names like Yannick Ngakoue, Carl Lawson, Shaq Lawson, and Emmanuel Ogbah populate the free-agent market. Aging warhorse Calais Campbell is also on the market as the old head of the group at a spry 37 years old. Tyus Bowser is tied to the coaching staff via new DC Dennard Wilson with the Ravens. It’s not a glaring priority, but Tennessee would be wise to look into it just in case. Defensive tackle is another position where depth has to be addressed. Perhaps they will monitor the camp cut wire for help.
Right Tackle
The team declined to address the right tackle position during the offseason process but still has a chance to do so. Dillon Radunz is slated to man the position but has been less than inspiring thus far in his career. Unproven talents like Nicholas Petit-Frere will back him up or beat him out. Right tackle exclusive free agents such as Geron Christian, Prince Tega Wanogho, and David Quessenberry are still available. Christian has a tie to Bill Callahan. Perhaps the team could take a flier on converting players like Donovan Smith and D.J. Humphries from the left side.
