Ty Hamilton has proven to be a controlling presence on the Ohio State defensive line and is looking to follow in his brother’s footsteps this April. Here is a 2025 NFL Draft Early Scouting Report and film analysis on him.
Overview, Film Analysis, and Early 2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report of Ohio State DL Ty Hamilton
Measurables:
- 6’3”
- 295 lbs
Player Background:
The younger brother of former Ohio State defensive lineman and current Jacksonville Jaguar DaVon Hamilton, Ty Hamilton committed to the Buckeyes in the class of 2020. The Pickerington Central HS product was rated a three-star recruit and a Top-30 prospect in Ohio. He saw a short time in two games his freshman year, but he didn’t record any statistics. He worked his way into the DL rotation in 2021, playing in 13 games and totaling six tackles and two sacks.
The following year, Hamilton remained a strictly part-time player. He started five games and recorded just 0.5 sacks and a pass deflection. However, by the middle of the 2023 season, he regularly topped the depth chart, starting eight times and making 38 tackles with two sacks. He’s well on the path to a massive final campaign through 10 contests in 2024. His 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble are both career highs and he’s been an impressive piece on the OSU defense.
Accolades:
- Honorable Mention All-Big 10 Team (2024)
Strengths/Pros:
Hamilton continually shows elite leg drive and the ability to bull rush offensive linemen backward. He explodes off the line of scrimmage and can overpower whoever gets put in front of him. He controls linemen at a much higher rate than most defensive linemen, continuing to fight until he gets his way. Recovering after initially losing leverage is his major strength. He simply refuses to get moved out of his spot and continues to drive ahead.
Hamilton has a sharp get-off at the beginning of the play, working into his anchor early. He rarely ever gets moved off of it after that. He’s a heavy hitter when he gets his hands on the ball carrier and utilizes his size to bring them down. He also uses his arms well when engaged with an OL, flashing the ability to make plays outside of his frame.
Weaknesses/Cons:
Hamilton’s problem gets exposed far too frequently: His inability to win reps at a decent rate with other pass-rush moves. His bull rush is powerful, but a lack of adequate hand technique and a low quantity of moves make him a one-trick pony at times. He needs to be much more violent with his hands when his first move doesn’t work.
Hamilton’s violence is also often delayed on stunts, taking too long to rotate around to his assignment and being technically outmatched when doing so. While he’s an incredible run defender, he tends to give away running lanes by focusing too much on moving the OL backward.
Potential Team Fits:
NFL Projection:
Hamilton’s profile is somewhat cut and dry because his strengths and weaknesses are glaring. His run defense and anchor are already good enough to plug him into the interior of most defensive lines and he has shown promise in other areas. Undoubtedly, he can be an NFL player and a good one at that, but he has significant work to do as a pass rusher to become a three-down DL.
