Four-time Pro Bowler Derek Carr will likely head to a new team this season and the Panthers, Chargers may be the best fit for him. According to Bleacher Report, rumors are spreading that the New Orleans Saints will make decisions amid the disastrous salary cap. One of those may include Carr who’s been atrocious and unable to stay healthy for most of the year. They’re still not mathematically out of the postseason, but it’s easier to secure a top-five draft pick.
There are plenty of issues, including the lack of pass catchers and secondary talent. After releasing Marshon Lattimore and firing Dennis Allen, the Saints have no other choice but to rebuild this entire roster. Carr is among the names like Cameron Jordan and Tyrann Mathieu who could move to save the Saints money. Originally selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, the veteran quarterback was hoping to establish in a new offense after spending the past eight years with the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, injuries have been catching up to him and it’s been slowing down his ability to stay on the field. The Chances of the Saints releasing Carr are high but it shouldn’t be too long until he finds a new destination. Carr is still a starter in this league despite the ongoing struggles with the stagnant offenses he’s been dealing with. He may have to earn for the starting role again and the Panthers, Chargers could bring out the best in him.
NFL Insider Hints Starting Quarterback Derek Carr Will Head To New Team – Panthers, Chargers Possible Fits
Fresh Start in Carolina
It may be harder if the Saints are willing to put Derek Carr on the trade block and agree on a deal to send him to Carolina. However, the Panthers may bring in Carr for a visit if the Saints decide he isn’t a reliable starter anymore. Bryce Young was benched earlier this season in replacement for bridge veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton. Despite the 3-7, the Panthers find themselves in an interesting situation since Young did improve.
Head Coach Dave Canales is still reluctant to the idea of committing to Young. This means they may search for a new quarterback in next year’s draft but whatever new starter they’ll bring in won’t be ready for a full-time role. Every option is on the table for Carolina so they might as well bring in Carr to create some quarterback competition to see if Young is capable of being their long-term starter. No matter the situation, the Panthers should sign a new veteran quarterback once they decide they’ll draft a new signal-caller.
Help for Justin Herbert
Meanwhile, Justin Herbert has been a reliable starter for the Los Angeles Chargers for many seasons. They still have some depth issues to resolve since Herbert has been banged up this year. The team brought in Taylor Heinicke but he isn’t going to be a full-game starter. He isn’t going to bring in wins like Carr probably would.
The Chargers may not have a quarterback issue but they must protect Herbert at all costs. Carr is getting older and could lead this team in the right direction in the postseason if they make it. He won’t be nearly the same as Herbert but his experience could set him apart from other quarterbacks they have on their roster.
