The Chicago Bears offense is finally moving in the right direction. After a rocky start to the season, the Bears had back-to-back stellar performances on offense against the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers. Heading into a Week 6 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, NFL sportscaster Rich Eisen had a chance to catch up with some of the Bears players. When interviewing star wide receiver D.J. Moore, Moore mentioned that “everybody’s wifi is finally connecting” on offense, and it’s more than meets the eye.

Caleb Williams Continuing to Impress

There’s a growing sense around the league that rookie quarterback Caleb Williams is settling into the Bears’ offense. With steady improvement each week, Eisen notes that the Bears are “adding a little bit more to the offense each and every week,” with Williams handling the increased workload. As the No. 1 overall pick, Williams isn’t simply relying on his physical talents to succeed. According to Eisen, a typical day for him includes waking up at 6 a.m., working out, attending various meetings, and being one of the last players to leave as he heads home to study film. The dedication Williams has to grow and develop not only as a player but also on a personal level is remarkable.

It’s easy to get caught up during the season on the little mistakes with a rookie quarterback, but Williams is taking the right steps on the path of development. Over the last 10 quarters of football, Williams has a 70.1% completion percentage, 7.9 yards per attempt, a 5-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a 109.8 passer rating. It’s infectious on the Bears’ offense because Williams’ composure and command on the field continue to shine and make everyone around him better. It’s a remarkable turnaround from the start of the season.

Bears Offense Starting to Develop

NFL Data Analyst Warren Sharp recently shared a viral post displaying the route trees of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba and D.J. Moore, both with and without Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron. The post highlighted Waldron’s ineffective utilization of these two star wideouts, prompting criticism of his play-calling abilities. However, in the following week, Moore’s route tree significantly improved, resulting in 105 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Sure, the Bears faced a struggling Panthers team, but that doesn’t diminish the significant improvement in Waldron’s play-calling.

Moore was asked how the chemistry between him and Williams has developed, and he had a funny response:

“He’s been bossy lately. Telling us that we need to be on the details…If we don’t hit something in practice, he’s going to tell us how we need to run it.”

When asked about Moore’s comment, Williams playfully replied:

“Bossy? Sounds a little sassy, you know what I mean.”

To be clear, they’re joking around—just some light-hearted banter between two offensive stars. But this is precisely the type of progress that should get every Bears fan excited. It seems like the Bears are finally getting it right on offense.
