The Philadelphia Eagles defense has been an issue early in this season. However, there have been a couple bright spots worth mentioning. One of them has been the play of linebacker Zack Baun. He came to Philadelphia with little fanfare but has quickly become a fan favorite. Baun has done a bit of everything for this Eagles defense. Even though the unit is struggling, Baun is not the problem.
Zach Baun is a Bright Spot in the Eagles Defense
Out of the Shadows
For the first four years of his career, Baun was a rotational linebacker for the Saints. With stars like Demario Davis on the team, Baun would never get a chance in New Orleans. However, after signing with the Eagles on a one-year deal in free agency, he would have a chance to be a starter. The Eagles are a team that has not prioritized the linebacker position over the years, preferring stop gap options rather than investing heavily in the position. That made Baun was a good fit for the Eagles. He was a former third round pick, who had an illustrious college career at Wisconsin.
So far, Baun has made GM Howie Roseman look smart. He is top five in the NFL in tackles and has been constantly around the ball. Baun has already set acareer-highh in tackles despite only playing four games. He has also done a good job rushing the passer from his off-ball linebacker position. Baun has two sacks, which leads the team. While that may speak more to the underperformance of the defensive line, Baun’s productivity can’t be denied.
Part of the Turnaround
The Eagles defense has been a problem this season, but they have the pieces to turn things around. Baun figures to be part of that turnaround. If the Eagles generate a consistent push from their defensive line, that makes Baun’s job much easier. It will give him an ability to make even more splash plays in the background. Another way to get Baun even more involved is to use him more as a blitzer. Vic Fangio’s defenses typically do not blitz a lot, but it could be a solution to get them going. Baun has been a great pass rushing linebacker his entire career, going back to Wisconsin. If the defensive line can’t get pressure on their own, Baun could be an extra body to get after the quarterback.
Between a lackluster pass rus, and a leaky secondary, the Eagles defense has underwhelmed. However, Zack Baun has made himself money so far this season. His play will only improve as the rest of the defense picks up their play. The bye week is a huge opportunity for the Eagles to make adjustments. Whatever adjustments they do make, Zack Baun figures to factor heavily in the Eagles defense going forward. He is far from the biggest name on this defense, but he has stepped up his play and done as much as he can to keep this defense afloat. Zack Baun deserves recognition for stepping up when so many others have not.
