Chargers vs Panthers Prediction
Chargers 24, Panthers 10
Carolina looked dreadful in their season-opening loss (47-10) to New Orleans. The concern over Bryce Young’s ceiling is at an all-time high after following a poor rookie campaign by going only 13-for-30, for 161 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions (including a pick on his first pass of the season).
The Panthers’ running game tandem of Chuba Hubbard and Miles Saunders combined for only 36 rushing yards. And no pass catcher looked dangerous.
On the other hand, Carolina’s porous defense made Derek Carr (19-for-23 for 200 yards and three touchdowns) look like a star. The Saints tandem of Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams also thrived. The Panthers simply looked abysmal on both sides of the ball.
Meanwhile, Los Angles started the season on a hopeful note after a 22-10 victory against the rival Raiders. Herbert looked sharp, despite offseason concerns about the club’s lack of receiving threats.
Above all else, the Chargers’ defense looked impressive in week one. The unit held Las Vegas to under 300 total yards of offense, and limited the Raiders’ rushing attack to only 71 yards on the ground. They pass rush also sacked Gardner Minshew four times.
Unless Carolina rapidly course corrects, this matchup is primed for a blowout by the Chargers.
Chargers vs Panthers Best Bet
Chargers (-240)
Los Angles has a few defensive starters currently listed on the injury report. Most notable is star pass rusher Joey Bosa, who is recovering from a back injury. Defensive backs Ja’Sir Taylor, Alohi Gilman, and linebackers Denzel Perryman are all also liked as questionable.
However, Carolina’s poor offense hardly poses a threat to the Chargers chance at victory. A Los Angles victory is the safest bet of the week two slate.
Under 43.5 (-115)
Expect Herbert and company to get off to a quick lead against one of the worst defenses in football, and are now without 2023 Pro-Bowler Derrick Brown. The Chargers will quickly go into to run-heavy mode, while Young and the Panthers will struggle to put points on the board.
At the end of the day, this should be a low-scoring affair.
Chargers vs Panthers Prop Bets
JK Dobbins Over 57.5 Yards Rushing (-115)
The aforementioned run heavy game flow should lead to a big day by the Chargers running back room. While Gus Edward’s 11 carries narrowly edged out Dobbins’ 10 for the team lead, the latter back was far more effective (26 yards for Edwards vs 135 yards and a touchdown for Dobbins).
Expect the former Ohio State superstar to feast in this week two matchup. He is a legitimate threat to once again surpass 100 yards.
