Miami Dolphins: How Jalen Ramey’s Contract Extension Compares to other Cornerbacks

Jalen Ramsey's contract extension makes him the highest-paid corner in the NFL. How does the Dolphins' deal rank alongside Ramsey's peers?
Jalen Ramsey's Contract

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that superstar corner Jalen Ramsey’s contract extension with the Miami Dolphins is worth $72.3 million over the next three seasons. This immediately places Ramsey as the highest-paid player at his position.

Superstar Jalen Ramsey and the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms on a massive contract extension.

Jalen Ramsey’s contract is well-earned. The former Florida State superstar easily grades as a top-10 cornerback entering the 2024 campaign. Ramsey is a statistical outlier who has seven Pro Bowls to his name, a Super Bowl title, and a BSC National championship. The question is, how does this deal compare with Ramsey’s peers?

The Top Five Highest Paid Corners

Second on the list of highest-paid corners is Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II. The second-generation DB’s $24 million average annual value (AAV) is narrowly surpassed by Ramsey’s $24.1 AAV. The two are very closely ranked, with the Broncos’ star ranking 4th in PFF’s grades. This range makes sense for both players.

Next is Green Bay cornerback Jaire Alexander, whose contract gives him a $21 million AAV. At just 27 years old, the consensus top-10 option, and two-time Pro-Bowler is well worth the Packers’ financial commitment.

Fourth is Atlanta corner AJ Terrell. The former Second-Team All-Pro selection’s deal gives him a $20.25 million AAV. While a down 2023 season places Terrell outside the top 32 in PFF’s list, the 25 year old has sky-high potential.

Browns’ veteran Denzel Ward rounds out the top-five highest-paid cornerbacks with a $20.1 AAV. Ward is a three-time Pro-Bowler and graded just outside the top 15 at his position last year. He is a key reason why Cleveland’s defense is one of the most dangerous in all of football.

The Rest of the Top Ten

According to USA Today, the top ten includes the following stars:

  • 6. Marlon Humphrey, Baltimore Ravens: $19.5 million
  • 7 (tie). Trevon Diggs, Dallas Cowboys: $19.4 million
  • 7 (tie). Marshon Lattimore, New Orleans Saints: $19.4 million
  • 9. Tyson Campbell, Jacksonville Jaguars: $19.125 million
  • 10. L’Jarius Sneed, Tennessee Titans: $19.1 million

Many NFL extensions quickly devolve into overpayments. However, this context shows that Jalen Ramsey’s Contact Extension was sensible for the the player and the franchise. Ramsey will assuredly bring his trademark excellence and championship pedigree to South Beach in 2024 and beyond.

How do you think Ramsey will fair in his time with the Miami Dolphins?
