Quarterback Options for the Raiders if Minshew Mania Fails

The Raiders have a lot riding on Minshew as Antonio Pierce looks to make an impact in year one. But who does he turn to if Minshew flops?

Gardner Minshew is set to start in week one against the LA Chargers, yet there is debate among NFL fans about whether he serves better as a backup. Known for his impact coming off the bench, Minshew’s performance tends to wane when he’s relied on for a full season. While he possesses the playmaking ability and leadership qualities of a top-tier starter, his arm strength and decision-making are often criticized. Should he not meet expectations, the Raiders must consider potential replacements to salvage their season.

Quarterback Options for the Raiders if Minshew Mania Fails

1. Aidan O’Connell | QB | Las Vegas Raiders

O’Connell has garnered acclaim from his receivers, past teammates, and coaches alike. Antonio Pierce has commended the second-year player for his offseason progress. Given his reliable decision-making, precision, and arm strength, O’Connell should have the opportunity to be next in line for the starting job. His previous inexperience and limited playmaking skills are the primary reasons he was overlooked for the starting role. However, as the season progresses and he accumulates more reps behind Minshew and familiarizes himself with the Getsy offense, he should be poised to step in immediately should Minshew underperform.

2. Hendon Hooker | QB | Detroit Lions

Despite a stellar final season at Tennessee, Hooker is underrated by NFL fans. His draft position suffered due to his age and a season-ending ACL injury. Currently, with Detroit, Hooker remains benched behind Jared Goff, potentially squandering his talents. His size, athleticism, decision-making, and accuracy suggest he could be a franchise quarterback. However, Hooker’s age, 26, and injury history are concerns. After a solid preseason a trade by the Raiders for an early day-three draft pick could offer him an opportunity.

3. Sam Howell | QB | Seattle Seahawks

Howell possesses significant potential if properly honed and coached. He exhibits remarkable toughness, athleticism, and arm strength, with a knack for precise downfield passes. However, his tendency to force passes regardless of coverage is a major concern. While leading the league in various passing categories as a starter, he also topped the list for interceptions. His playing style is reminiscent of Jameis Winston’s 30-touchdown, 30-interception season. With one of the league’s strongest arms, Howell must improve his decision-making. Acquiring Howell would likely cost the Raiders at least a third-round pick, which may end up being too steep a price but only time will tell.

4. Ryan Tannehill | QB | UFA

Tannehill could offer the most experience in the quarterback room, serving as a mentor for O’Connell if the Raiders require one. Previously ousted in Miami, Tannehill found success in Tennessee, leading them to an AFC championship game. Although he’s older now and may not replicate past successes, the Raiders might consider him if they believe a veteran quarterback could boost their chances. His long-standing record as a winning quarterback speaks for itself having an 80-71 record being on mostly mediocre to bad teams. Despite the unlikelihood of this move due to his age, the Raiders might have to explore this option if Minshew and O’Connell don’t improve.

5. Tyson Bagent | QB | Chicago Bears

Bagent became familiar with the Raiders following last season’s debacle against the Bears. As an undrafted free agent from a Division Two school, Bagent excelled against the Raiders’ defense in his first career start. Bagent and new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy worked together last season when Bagent showed flashes. With an impressive preseason, Bagent could add significant upside and skill to the Raiders’ quarterback lineup. While the Bears seem happy to have him, a third or fourth-round pick offer from the Raiders might be tempting.

Final Thoughts

Antonio Pierce faces a critical first season, with the quarterback position being a key focus. The Raiders will likely embrace their current quarterback situation, aiming to win games while acknowledging the possibility of securing a high draft pick. Minshew and O’Connell have underperformed in the offseason, but with the regular season a week away, it’s time to face reality. The Raiders may explore these options to assess their potential for a promising future. Time will reveal the outcome, but for now, it’s the dawn of Minshew Mania.
