Saints, Chargers May Trade for Former Starting Quarterback

Here is how the New Orleans Saints or Los Angeles Chargers may trade for former starting quarterback, Trey Lance.

The New Orleans Saints or Los Angeles Chargers may trade for former starting quarterback, Trey Lance before the regular season begins. In Bleacher Report’s recent article, Ryan Fowler put together a list of five players who could request a trade and one of them is Lance. The quarterback’s future remains in question as the Cowboys have been stalling to give Dak Prescott a contract extension and it’s interesting that Jerry Jones expects Lance to make the roster even though he wants to see more from him. Lance was able to make a good impression against the Raiders, leading them to a victory and a better output than their first preseason week one loss in Los Angeles.

The North Dakota product was a No. 3 selection in the 2021 NFL Draft with hopes to carve out a starting role for the 49ers but failed to evolve under the pressure, leading to his move to Dallas. It’s a critical year for Lance who is probably better off joining a roster that can give him more development and on-field experience entering age 24. However, the Cowboys are finally letting him shine this preseason but it shouldn’t shock anyone that he requests a trade if they put him back on the shelf behind Prescott even though he put up a good performance. The last two preseason games for Lance are crucial to mark his trade value.

New Orleans still has questions about the position since Derek Carr is on the hot seat and doesn’t look to improve with the supporting cast they have. It’s Carr and Chris Olave pretty much in the passing game which could lead to a new era of Lance in New Orleans. The same can be said for Justin Herbert since he’s lacking legitimate wide receivers.

He Will Likely Be in a New Uniform

The chances of Lance being in a new uniform this upcoming 2024 regular season are high. He would probably have a better chance of starting new with a roster that’s lacking an established starter than waiting for Prescott to suffer an injury. Prescott will likely stay in Dallas unless Jones thinks of something different at the last minute. The Saints are the team that could give him that opportunity as they’re looking for a fresh pair of legs to help Carr.

Carr is one of the worst quarterbacks right now and his supporting cast doesn’t make it better. He likely won’t last a full season which may lead Spencer Rattler to take over the duties. However, he’s a rookie and most quarterbacks don’t break until their second or third year if they’re making a long-term impact. Someone like Lance has been getting experience in Dallas and could carve out his spotlight in New Orleans under Dennis Allen’s new regime. The Chargers don’t necessarily need a quarterback but still would be viable if Jim Harbaugh wants to start completely new.

Other Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson is not going anywhere as the MVP anticipates staying healthy and still leading the Ravens in his prime. However, Baltimore hasn’t been able to establish a legitimate backup for Jackson and Josh Johnson has been doing nothing. If the team wants to win ball games without Lamar, they should be able to obtain Lance for cheap to showcase his skills behind that fiery offense with Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.

Minnesota Vikings

It isn’t the biggest need to trade for a quarterback even after the J.J. McCarthy injury. They have Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens backing him up this season but if they have playoff aspirations then it would be viable to trade for a leader that may be ready for a starting role. Darnold hasn’t been doing anything but a draft bust and Mullens hasn’t been playing many games to even last for a full season. Lance would probably be the type of player to last a season to see what he could provide for a roster.

Carolina Panthers

Bryce Young finally has an extraordinary supporting cast with the additions of Diontae Johnson and rookie Xavier Legette. However, they have an older Andy Dalton backing him up and he’s the type of player to not last a full season. Lance would probably be the better player given his age and the long-term success that they could find from him.
