Despite a challenging 16-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the New Orleans Saints showcased several standout performers on their roster. While the game didn’t end in their favor, three players stood out, solidifying their potential as crucial contributors to the Saints‘ future success. With one preseason matchup remaining against the Titans before the season opener against the Carolina Panthers, the Saints are faced with the task of finalizing cuts to the depth of their roster. Implementing these tough decisions, the players’ performances in the preseason will be pivotal in elevating their stock. Here are the three standout Saints who significantly boosted their standing against the 49ers.
These Three Saints Are On The Rise After Their Tough Week Two Preseason Loss To The San Francisco 49ers
Mr. Do-It-All
The Saints deploy one of the most unique weapons in the entire NFL with a Swiss army knife, Taysom Hill. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak visited Hill during the offseason to discuss his vision for the versatile weapon. During the preseason matchup, Hill lined up all over the offense, including snaps at running back, tight end, and fullback. He brought much-needed energy and “juice” to the offense, finishing with five carries for 21 yards and a touchdown. Over the first two preseason games, Hill has taken snaps at five different positions. These include nine in the backfield, seven at tight end, and two in the slot. Hill is an explosive playmaker who runs with great physicality despite his 34th birthday coming up soon. Hill will be a crucial part of this Saints offense and will see plenty of goal-line work due to his running style.
Left Guard Solved?
Lucas Patrick has shown solid improvement from week one to week two of the preseason. His performance helps to solidify his role as a starter on the Saints’ offensive line. Initially facing challenges in week one, Patrick made noticeable adjustments, demonstrating better technique, stronger pass protection, and more effective run blocking in the second week. His ability to quickly adapt and elevate his performance is a promising sign for the Saints as they continue to build a more cohesive offensive line. He took all his snaps at the left guard position, only allowing one sack. Patrick must play consistently to hang onto the starting left guard position and build more confidence in the Saints offensive line. The offensive line will be crucial to the success of the New Orleans Saints.
Division II Stud
The Saints have a knack for finding hidden gems in the undrafted rookie market, such as wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. They may have struck gold once again in rookie cornerback Rico Payton out of division II Pittsburg State. The rookie has held his own in coverage despite being targeted 13 times over the preseason, according to PFF. Payton has primarily lined up at outside corner. He has only allowed a 23.1% reception rate with four pass breakups over the preseason. The Saints bolster one of the best secondaries in the NFL, which is filled with great depth. Payton has an uphill battle to make this roster. He will have one more chance to crack this loaded secondary with another strong performance against the Titans.
