The Washington Commanders have named their starting quarterback for the 2024-2025 NFL season. To no surprise, rookie Jayden Daniels has been named the starting quarterback for Washington. The number two overall pick will have the keys to the Commanders offense in his first season.

Commanders Name Starting Quarterback

Jayden Daniels had a breakout season last year at LSU. The star quarterback accounted for 4,946 total yards along with 50 touchdowns, 40 through the air, and ten on the ground en route to winning the Heisman Trophy. The Commanders are in desperate need of a jump offensively. Last season, Washington finished 22nd in total yards, 25th in points per game, 20th in first downs per game, 19th in passing yards, and 26th in rushing yards. Daniels is a perfect quarterback to take over this team because he is extremely mobile. Daniels is just as much of a threat on the ground as he is through the air, hence his absurd stats last year. The main weapons that Daniels will throw to are Terry McLaurin and Austin Ekeler. When given opportunities, McLaurin has proven to be an elite receiver, and Ekeler is one of the best pass-catching backs in the league.

Daniels/Commanders Outlook

Daniels is more than capable of making this Washington a top-15 offense in the league in his rookie year. However, there is a ceiling on this team. Daniels is still a rookie and will make plenty of rookie mistakes, and Washington still has plenty of other holes on their roster. Outside of McLaurin and Ekeler, Daniels does not have much to work with. He will likely be asked to create lots of plays with his legs.

Overall, Daniels is absolutely a contender for NFL Rookie of the Year. He is a difference-maker for Washington immediately, and they will undoubtedly improve on last season. However, this team is far away from contending from a Super Bowl. Their ceiling is very likely around nine wins this season.
