According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, the press asked Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts about his relationship with Head Coach Nick Sirianni. Despite a rocky end to the season, Hurts said that the relationship was in a “great place” while also admitting to frustration last season.
“I think if we were maybe on the same page, we maybe would have accomplished the things we would have and we didn’t. But that’s a learning experience,” Hurts said.
These sentiments seem to be moving the relationship in a positive direction after the offense crumbled in 2023.
Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts on His Relationship With Nick Sirianni
A Disastrous End to the 2023 Season
Things did not end well for the Eagles in 2023. Hurts play regressed and Sirianni showed he couldn’t handle the offensive load. The passing game regressed significantly. The team went from the ninth-best passing offense in their 2022 Super Bowl campaign to the 17th-best in 2023. Much of the problem was a sense of unevenness on offense, with an overreliance on screen passes and deep shots with no motion.
The struggles started to show in their record. The team went from 10-1 to 11-6 and was quickly ousted from the playoffs. This seemingly also created frustration in Hurts. Conversations about tension between Hurts and Sirianni were sparked in June during a press conference.
Hurts answered a question about Sirianni’s decision to give up playcalling to Kellen Moore. The question was about Hurts’ feelings toward the move. Instead of taking the moment to defend his coach and his decision, Hurts gave a non-answer.
“I mean that’s a great question. I don’t know that I know the answer to it,” Hurts said according to Delaware Online.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini also added fuel to the fire saying that their relationship was still a “work in progress” due to differing personalities, with this coming from a Sports Illustrated report.
The two are going to need to be on the same page going into 2024. The acquisitions made this offseason have led fans and pundits to have Championship expectations for this team once again. Leadership at the top must be harmonious for that to be possible.
